Store Owner Sentenced in Canada

 

 

Toronto, Ont., Canada, June 22, 2010 -- A 62-year-old Toronto, Ontario convenience store owner was sentenced to one year in prison on June 14 for fraudulently claiming a $5.7-million lottery jackpot.

Hafiz Malik pleaded guilty in December to cheating Lorraine Teicht out of the winning Lotto 6/49 jackpot in June of 2004 when she checked her tickets at his store. Malik told Teicht that she won only $10 -- but several months later he claimed the prize for himself..

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation paid Malik the jackpot.
