Suspect Sought in Mass. C-Store Killing

New Bedford, Mass., June 25, 2009 -- Law enforcement authorities are attempting to identify a gunman who shot to death an innocent bystander during the attempted robbery of a convenience store here on Saturday, June 20.

The store's surveillance camera captured images of a man in a gray sweatshirt pointing a gun at a clerk at the Petro Mart.

The gunman shot a 32-year-old resident of New Bedford, who was inside the Petro Mart visiting his friend, a store clerk, according to authorities.

The assailant was described as a light-skinned Hispanic man in his late teens or early 20s, between 5-11 and 6-2, with a pronounced nose and thin mustache.

Authorities want to interview two witnesses, who were also caught on camera.

Just after 8:30 p.m., the suspect walked into the store with a black 9 mm handgun and told the clerk of his intentions to commit robbery. For unknown reasons, the suspect fired two shots, one of which hit the victim in the head.

He died the next day in a local hospital.
